Friday 13th

I had Friday, May 13th as a vacation day and joined a few family members to enjoy a warm May day away from the house. We grabbed Will, our five month old Australian Shepherd, and stopped in at the Hagersville Auction Centre. The goal was expose Will to lots of people and other animals.

Like every Friday, 13th we were overwhelmed by the volume of bikers heading into Port Dover.

At one point in the livestock barn I had Will with me. In front of us a loose goat stopped motionless in front of an open door. Will and the goat were frozen in time--both wondering what to do and I suspect, both wondering what the hell kind of an ugly animal is that.

The goat owner was in hot pursuit and the goat knew it. He bolted back away from us and into the parking lot where the underside of a Ford F-150 looked secure.

Not so recent pics wanted - Brantford Mall

The other day I posted the following message in the Brantford Group on Flickr.

I recently viewed a couple of videos on youtube. 1. taken in September, 2008, before demolition; and 2. showing images of the Brantford Mall in December 1990.

Does anyone have any images prior to the construction of the mall? I have one--an image of Dairee Delight before it was moved to the Home Hardware Plaza.

Town Crier downtown to meet Santa

David McKee, Brantford's town crier, attended the city's Santa Claus parade tonight. In full voice he mingled amongst the large crowd of city residents to enjoy the parade.

For years I have been disappointed in the lack of interest in Brantford's downtown. I will always want to remember Brantford's downtown as it was during Christmas in the 1960s, when Colborne and Dalhousie streets were crowded with people.

I got to see a bit of that tonight--the people tonight reminded me of the old downtown Brantford from that time. If it had only been snowing, it would have been perfect.

The Great Houdini

This autumn has been very cold with a bit of snow (a bit more in some places than others) here in south central Ontario. One morning on my way to work I noticed a black and white object finding shelter under a neighbour's car. Either a kitten or a small skunk I thought--I drove on.

Over the next few days we learned we had three kittens living in our neighbourhood in some harsh weather conditions. Unknown to me our automatic garage door opener had failed to close properly one night and we had captured two of the three kittens. A little tabby, which was scared and a black and white kitten that was fighting for its life--he later became known as Cujo.

A few days later came the third and final kitten--Houdini. We captured Houdini in the same manner, but this time on purpose. But, this little kitten knew how to hide. I moved an huge number of items from garage trying to find this kitten, but the kitten appeared gone. It was hours before the great Houdini appeared--and what a treat... have you ever seen a moustache on the face of kitten like this before?

Houdini also has white socks with what appears to be a few black toes. All three have been under great care by my wife who is ready to rename Cujo.

Halfway down a by-street of one of our New England towns stands a rusty wooden house, with seven acutely peaked gables, facing towards various points of the compass, and a huge, clustered chimney in the midst. The street is Pyncheon Street; the house is the old Pyncheon House; and an elm-tree, of wide circumference, rooted before the door, is familiar to every town-born child by the title of the Pyncheon Elm.

That is the opening paragraph to the novel of The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I should read this. My wife purchased the novel while in Salem, which she had not read either. But, it remained a priority stop on our autumn visit to Salem, Massachusetts. Nathaniel Hawthorne cousin, Susanna Ingersoll, owned the property at one time.

As we waited for our guided tour I did my usual navigation around the grounds attempting to find the right composition. My wife too joined in the challenge with her camera. I snapped away and found little excitement in the shots I was taking. Upon downloading them at home I tried to create a panoramic view of the yard, which did not work very well either. From now on I'm going to take pictures of everything--even the sky so I can get it all in. :)

Bad Moon Rising

The lunar eclipse on 20 Feb 2008 was not a bad moon rising. In usual fashion it is my experience and skills at taking moon images that is bad. Last night I used a Minolta AF 75mm-300mm zoom lens (@300mm) with a Jessop 2X Mx/AF converter. Looking at the camera information--how do we get a 900mm focal length from this combination? And, with this collection of shots last night it crossed my mind about condensation as I moved the camera in and out of the house. Probably not a good move--but the eclipse lasted for hours. It was -14C outside--and slightly warmer in. I decided to stay home and attempt to fight off the city light noise (specifically the street lamp in front of my house) and enjoy a beer during the eclipse. The front porch of my southern Ontario home was where I decided to mount the tripod. Comments always welcome... be brutal.

We returned to England on holiday, since leaving in 2005, to help our daughter move back home. After England had suffered from bad floods we arrived on the best of days. The best day to travel on the London Eye and walk in London--the day of the Tour de France--no cars on the road. Angela took the best picture of the day--see it here.

My daughter's Christmas gift, a dart board, was finally mounted in the games room. Brent mounted the necessary background cork. Our first game, '301' took about 45 minutes to play. Is that a long time? :) I finally got the 'double' 1 necessary to win the game.

More like the frost set strip. I was very disappointed in the weather this past week in Vegas. I attended Autodesk's big event of the year, Autodesk University (AU). I learned numerous things and had a great time. It was my first AU. Though there were minor issues with the organization of the event (like not telling me the pick up location for the shuttle after moving it) I think the organizors did a FANTASTIC job; from meals, events, and simply getting people to where they needed to be.

I was very disappointed in numerous courses. My main concern was software that crashed in presentations and in labs. In one case we came to AU with knowledge of a bug in the software. When we presented the issue in the Exhibition hall to Autodesk their response seemed mixed, perhaps not surprised. But the kicker was during one of the courses when the presenter wanted to use this component--the software bug was displayed for all to see. Okay, I can understand Autodesk missing it (though it is a very big bug rendering a major component useless), but the presenter didn't even try it before the presentation.

Presenters with indepth knowledge of the products that I was interested in was not available. In fact, when I asked Autodesk and other publishing groups about books and training in these areas I was told that there wasn't enough demand for it... not yet. Hmmmm.

One Autodesk employee, based out of London, England said he would take my technical questions and concerns back to the office and reply back. Good stuff. BTW, Angela, this employee said he graduated from Kingston University--and wishes you the best of luck there.

As a first timer to Vegas I found the strip exciting and fun. I just had to visit and do a bit of gambling in all the big hotels from the Venetian to the Mandalay Bay Hotel. The Venetian is where AU was held and the Mandalay Bay is where I stayed.

The day was going well taking these shot of Pixie plus a short clip; then I decided to check our sump pumps. The weather here has been very wet. We have two pumps supporting two separate areas. One of them I heard coming on every 15 minutes while the other remained quiet. The quiet pump had failed and the water was only millimetres from going over the top. A new pump has been installed just in time.

With good friends we made our annual visit down to Waterford's Pumpkinfest. Though its an all weekend event we typically enjoy the Friday evening events of viewing locally decorated homes for Halloween and the fireworks. As usual the organizers put on a great even--once again.

Whiteman's creek crosses more territory than just Apps Mill. However, I seem use the names App's Mill, Rest Acres and Whiteman's Creek interchangeability.

In any event, another beautiful autumn day not to be missed without a walk along the creek. This time, and the very first time, for Pixie. Many others found their way out to the creek and many of them stopped to meet Pixie, welcoming her to her first visit to the mill.

We were quite amazed she walked most of the journey.

I was also surprised to see a vistor taking a quick autumn swim with his dog in the creek. Click here for short video.

Mohawk Chapel

Canada's oldest surviving church, H. M. Royal Chapel of the Mohawks in Brant County is apparently the only Royal Chapel in Canada.

Shelley thought it might be pretty this time of year so a stop was planned.

This is also the burial location of Captain Joesph Brant.

Norfolk County Fair

We made the annual trip down to the Norfolk County Fair. The place hasn't changed in 20 years. I snapped a few images around the track and near the fairground office where the one-man-band was getting a huge audience (click here for short video).

Brent tried is luck at shooting out the red star with a gun that shot pellets somewhere within a few inches of where gun was pointing. He pointed the gun, which was equiped with a lazer, at the centre of the red star, and when he pulled the trigger pellets wondered all around the outside of the star.

New Pet

Brent is finally getting an animal he has wanted for some time. I am not sure if he is up for the work ahead, and we shall see if the cats and I are up for the work. This puppy, unnamed at the moment, is one of five pups from a well-known local couple. The mother, Cookie, is a 10-pound Jack Russell terrier who apparently likes Barlett pears. The father, Bunny, is a toy fox terrier and apparenly does not care for pears. This mixed breed have been named Newport terriers, by their owners who live on Newport Road

Out of the two remaining pups they had left when we visited Newport Road, one was a bit smaller than the other but was too bouncey for Brent. The larger of the two has more interesting colour on her head and was Brent's first choice. And, so far is not bouncey at all--very quiet and still.

Red Hats are Red Hot

The local Brantford group of the Red Hat Society, "a social organization where there is fun after fifty (and before) for women of all walks of life" (as their website states) joined Walter Gretzky in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada for the BIG BIKE RIDE.

Advertising their Red Hat Festival for April 2007, the Heart and Stroke organizers inadvertently put "Red Hot Festival" on the sign. So with a little digital manipulation we have it corrected :)

It has been a long time since I went to a Blue Jay game. The last time I went to a Jays game was during the CNE when their home ballpark was Exhibition Stadium. I think it cost me $5 to get in. :)

Spring is here

Spring has sprung. I have spent the last two weeks outdoors gardening; getting very dirty, getting very sore joints and hands--and loving it. I think I have created bigger flower gardens this spring then lawn that I had back in England. This first image shows my newly planted spruce tree, which in 15-20 years will be 60' high. Stay tuned for more pics :) In the foreground (about 20' in front of the spruce is a new gift from Laura to mom; a bird bath with a matching bench and ornament.

Near our back corner, in our neighbours yard, we have discovered a family of very friendly bunnies. While our cats were outside one of these bunnies came up to the patio and fortunately the cats did not attack it. It later wandered into the next yard where I snapped this next picture (I must tell you this is my neighbours yard--I keep my lawn in much better shape). Using a 10X optical zoom I simply framed the shot and snapped; and unknown to me at the time I had also captured a red (or purple) finch in the image.

So, when the temperature is comfortably below zero and the sun is shining (with a bit of snow on the ground) it is worth a walk on the trails. Trans Canada Trail

This image was taken on the Trans Canada Trail near Waterworks Park in Brantford, Ontario. I must say I am not taking enough pictures. I will return here to take more pictures... it is very pretty. The interesting thing to note here is this trail, along the Grand River, is part of the Trans Canada Trail. If you are are not aware of what this is... well "just imagine an 18,000-kilometre (11,250 mile) recreational corridor winding its way through every province and territory, linking over 800 communities along its route!". Has anyone walked it from end-t0-end yet?

Oh, yes we do live in a very big place. Did you know the distance from St. John's Newfoundland, Canada to London, England is 3734 km (2321 miles). But the distance to St. John's Newfoundland to Vancouver is 5000 km (3108 miles).

Respect for the Road (and other Road Users)

When we moved to England I had heard the horror stories of Canadians (American’s too) picking up a rental car at Heathrow and travelling only a few miles before abandoning the vehicle because they could not grasp driving on the left side of the road, or they lost it when they could not master that first roundabout (in a clockwise direction).

I too was very nervous the first time out. I picked my rental car at Marble Arch (not Heathrow). The strategy was to take the Underground out of the city core. Marble Arch, I thought, would be in the west side enabling me to catch the A4 to go west toward Bath. Little did I know that Marble Arch is one of the busiest places in London. I had to learn real quick…

Roundabouts took a bit of mastering... think left… but look right.

The roundabouts range in size from mini to the size of a large city block in Manhattan. You can think of a mini-roundabout as a single lane intersection in North America with a circle painted in the middle of the intersection. They grow in complexity from a single lane circle to multi-lane circles. Some have become so complex and burdened with so much traffic they have installed traffic signals to control the traffic. Then there are those nasty nested roundabouts and multi-joined roundabouts.

Now that we have moved back to Canada I miss proper roundabouts. I am pleased to see, however, roundabouts being installed in some locations throughout Ontario. One particular roundabout reminds me of Europe. It can be found on Townline Road in Cambridge, Ontario. Approaching this roundabout from the north there are two lanes entering the roundabout, making it just a bit more complicated for that unfamiliar Canadian driver.

In most situations these beat the hell out of a traffic light system. They are designed to keep traffic flowing not stopping it like the traffic light. I have had enough of the traffic light. Who the hell designed this system... Who would design a system where if you want to turn left you are placed facing oncoming traffic that also wants to turn left, but blocks your view of the oncoming traffic--preventing a safe left turn.

Ontario road users do not signal their intentions at roundabouts. Road users should signal right, in the case of an English roundabout, for a right turn before entering the roundabout if they intend to go past the 12 o’clock position of the roundabout (i.e. they are not turning left or going straight). Also they should put the left signal on if they plan to take the first exit on the roundabout. Ontario drivers do not signal their intention when they enter a roundabout.

Once you drive pass the exit immediately before the exit you want, you should signal your exit from the roundabout. Again, Ontario drivers do not signal their intention. Everyone just drives. In Ontario I’m not sure what the kids are being taught when they approach these great ancient inventions—but we need to get it sorted. Any driving instructors (or police officials) want to comment?

While driving in England I had an impression that the English drive way too fast, that the law didn’t care, but road users were generally more polite then those found in Canada (that last comment is so TRUE).

The speeding comment was based on experiences such as driving on narrow crooked roads (with 90 degree turns) at 50 miles per hour—while traffic queued up behind me. Speed limits, in general, are nation wide. They have a national speed limit system.

If you see a sign like this:

…it means you can travel at the national speed limit for that type of road. So you need to know what type of road you are on. On a motorway (i.e. divided highway) the national limit would be 70 mph (for a car). Dual carriageway (2-lane highway) the limit is 60 mph (for a car).

In this way if they decide to change the limit there is no need to change the signs.

Though people break speed limits, the English roads, I think, are becoming safer. They have installed a record number of safety cameras (a.k.a. speed cameras). These are permanently installed or placed in mobile units that take a high quality image of you and your car if you break the speed limit. They are over the country.

The law does not care if you know where they are (ie. Go ahead and purchase a GIS system that tracks them, or buy a camera detector)… they want you to know where they are so you’ll slow down. They claim to make them bright yellow so you can see them when you approach them. Hmmm. If speed kills and you place one of these every 1 mile down the road you might just slow down. Hell, half them don’t work, but you won’t know which ones work from those that don’t work.

In Ontario, the government prevented our Ontario roads from being littered with these cameras. And, the road users are sure to show us that they don’t need or want them. I have never seen so many speeding road users. Eg. 110 km/hour is not uncommon up highway 24 from Brantford to Cambridge in the morning. For those of you not familiar with the speed limit here (and that includes you road users that actually drive on it) it is currently 80 km/hour.

As for my comment about the UK law caring… well, that just isn’t so either. They are out there in full force. In Ontario, I have seen a few cars pulled off the road getting their well-deserved ticket or warning. But, in general, their presence is not there. As I say, in general, I believe this is the case. There are exceptions. I have seen or heard of those days where they go out on a mission, focusing on a specific issue---two-day enforcement program. TWO DAYS—Okay, we will drive safely for just 2 days then. :(

One thing I have been proud of is the way Canadian officials have enforced drunk driving over the years. This is something England was very poor at doing. During the last 2 years however, this has been changing.

Now it’s time to crack down on bad habits, poor driving, impatience on the road, and just plain ignorance of the road rules. I heard on CHUM FM news last week that Toronto had 20+ deaths due to pedestrians being hit by cars. Why… I bet being impatient was a big part of it. “I didn’t see them.” This means I didn’t stop my car and couldn’t be bothered to wait to see who else might be actually using the road.

Instead of waiting to put the pedal to metal at the next red light, observe the other users of the road and to see how they use it. See how many cars you can count that stop at a red light before proceeding to turn right on that red light. Stop means your wheels come to a complete stop (not over the cross walk). Hell, I watched 12 cars in a row not even slow down at the corner of Franklin Road and Chaplain in Cambridge. Did the laws in Ontario change in the past 6 years. Oh, hell, yes, you can turn right on a red as long as you beat the other guy to the intersection… and hell, you are already there... so go.

Come on—let’s enforce the rules. Put the cops back on the road and start fining drivers and maybe drivers will get the message. And, believe me, the officials will be rolling in the revenues.

And, when did it become legal to drive on the shoulder of the road? Last week, while driving north on Highway 24, a driver of a south bound car decided to drive down on the wrong side of the road and then on the east shoulder of the road so he didn't have to wait for north bound traffic.

This week I had a driver turning left in front of me at an intersection. However, he had to floor the engine and race his vehicle to get between the driver in front of me and my car. Can you picture this… as he guns it he now sees a pedestrian crossing the street where he wants to exit the intersection. I had no chance of stopping. I managed to squeak behind his car.

One last point… why are Canadians bitching about the high cost of automobile insurance? I can see why. The insurance industry has two things against it--the high cost of repairs and the high volume of impatient road users. England has the high cost of automobile repairs and my car insurance was £283 for 2005 (okay they bitch about high cost of insurance too...but...). I’ll let you convert that to Cdn $, but I'll bet you’ll have a tough time finding an Ontario insurer to get anywhere near that annual premium.

Apps Mill (a.k.a. Rest Acres)

One of Brant County's best places for a walk... hell, it's one of the best places for a walk on the planet... right Angela?

I know this is one of my daughter's favourite places to go... and mine too. I have some unique memories of Apps Mill when it was Rest Acres.

In the 1960's the city of Brantford ran a summer camp here called "Camp Toreaca". I think our main meeting place was about here. There were cabins located at this site (image above).

Located along Whiteman's Creek we'd swim, and catch turtles. There were high cliffs (high for us kids) for us to jump off into deep areas of the creek.

There were many sleepouts... one every Wednesday night. I remember building a lean-to in case of any rain (at about this location).

Camp Toreaca's final year was 1971.

They appear to still have a camp for the kids here. Camp Imaknuna is held here. Though the area still gets plenty of people passing through I was please to see a lack of litter.

If anyone has any stories, pictures, etc they'd like to share about Rest Acres and/or Camp Toreaca, please place your feedback here. Camp Toreaca seems to be a forgotten past of Apps Mill.

Pumpkin Fest

Another annual event not worth missing is Waterford's Pumpkin Fest. I like to attend autumn fairs and Pumpkin Fest in the evening. I was impressed by this years huge display of pumpkins.

Dan, Cheryl and Shelley enjoy the displays in the cool but dry and very comfortable weather conditions.

I think the displays have been getting higher too.

I was a bit disappointment in the number of homes that were decorated. However, those that were decorated--great job. And as usual a great fireworks displayed ended a good evening.

Shelley has made our home more festive too.

After missing out on 7 years of Ontario county fairs I found it a must to attend this years Norfolk County Fair. BTW, this year's pumpkin winner was with a pumpkin weighing in at almost 900lbs. There was another entry of over 900lbs, but it was missing that orange colour. Happy Thanksgiving.

Battle of Lundy's Lane - 25th July 1814

The Union Jack proudly sets atop this pole in Drummond Hill Cemetery on Lundy's Lane, the location of the Battle of Lundy's Lane which took place on 25th July 1814. I'm back in Niagara researching this six-hour battle where the British, Canadian and Native troops held their ground against the attaching American forces. Though the American's retreated their attach, both sides claimed victory. This was one of the final battles before the end of war, which again, both sides claimed victory, though the British held their ground and the borders between the US and Canada remained unchanged.
